The weather has been good over the last week or so, and continues to look reasonable for tomorrow night, unless it suddenly takes a turn for the worse. Hopefully it will remain with us over the Easter weekend.

Wednesday Night Climbing – 12th April

East

We’ll be venturing outside for the first Wednesday night climbing of the season at Trebanog. Information on the crag (including vague directions) and routes can be found on the wiki: https://swmc.org.uk/wiki/Trebanog – the crag is within spitting distance of the road. We usually arrive from about 17:45.

A number of members from the West have indicated that they will be joining us at this western meet.

West

We’ll be at Graves End on Wednesday and will meet at the NT carpark at Southgate at 17:30.

Easter Weekend Hut Trip  to North Wales – April 13 – 17

The plan is as follows: up Thursday evening 13th April, back late Monday 17th April.

If you haven’t been to the hut before, details are on the website. Further details on the meet is on the Bulletin Board.

Upcoming Meets

The following meets are currently planned in the next month, details are on the Bulletin Board, along with a summary on the website.

  • New Members’ Day at Morlais – April 22
  • Joint Wednesday evening at Box Bay (Porthcawl) – May 3

First Aid Course – 6th and 7th May

There are a few places remaining. If you would like a place, please contact Pete Clarke.

The course is an REC level 2, two day, certificated emergency first aid course. It is a required qualification for NGB awards. The course leaders are experienced mountain rescuers and leadership trainers. The course location is at Swansea University Bay Campus east of Swansea and located not far from junction 42 of the M4.

The cost for members of SWMC is £47. This includes mid break refreshments. The student refectory offers good value lunches or there are open spaces including the beach to take packed lunches.

Additional details will be submitted to applicants. This is a very good value course thanks to a
grant from Sports Council Wales.

A never ending tick list

Last August the BBC recorded a conversation between Gwyn Evans (former Chairman) and Kim Collis (former Secretary and Barn Warden) as part of The Listening Project, where they talk about different attitudes to risks in climbing. A snippet of this recording was broadcasted by BBC Radio 4 on Wednesday 5th April. The episode is entitled ‘A never ending tick list’ and the podcast says ‘Two members of the South Wales Mountaineering Club compare their lists of summits ticked off and routes taken’.
So, if you want to hear the thoughts of a couple of old members, the programme is now available online:

Activity Survey 2017

Thanks to those that have already responded to the survey. If you haven’t yet done so, the survey will remain open until Tuesday 18th April. It should not take too long to complete and every answer will be appreciated.
