Wednesday Night Climbing – 5th April
Spring is sprung! And a few are itching to go outdoors now that the hour has changed.
East
The east side of the club are staying indoors this week, as sunset is relatively early despite the clock change, with the main meeting at Boulders as usual. We may start head outside next week.

West

Low tide should be around 20:34, so Caswell might be do-able if starting at the top of the beach and working our way down as the water drops (Caswell is allegedly climbable 2.5 hours each side of low water). It’s close, easy to find, and has enough space to accommodate lots of people if we all want to go out to play! Meet at Caswell Bay Carpark at 5.30pm on Wednesday. If you’re arriving later we won’t be hard to find as the bay is relatively small.

An alternative destination of Foxhole Cove, avoiding any tide issue, with non-tidal Sport climbing, with several routes between grades 2 and 6a+ and a good selection above this, along with some non-tidal and tidal lower grade Trad. Meet at Southgate car park at 5.30pm on Wednesday. If you’re arriving later and don’t know the way, contact Matt Dix ([email protected]) and he’ll come and meet you at the car park.

Just a reminder to anyone who hasn’t been climbing outdoors before apart from shoes and harness you will also need a helmet, although spares may be available. Waterproofs and a head torch can also be useful. If it rains, we’ll be heading for Dynamic Rock anyway.

Weekend Meets
As usual, weather permitting, there will be members heading out climbing and walking on the weekend. Keep an eye out on the Bulletin Board for details, as there have already been a few outings this year, or contribute with suggestions.

Upcoming Meets
The following meets are currently planned in the next month, details are on the Bulletin Board, along with a summary on the website.

– Easter Hut Trip  to North Wales – April 13 – 17
– New Members’ Day at Morlais – April 22
– Joint Wednesday evening at Box Bay (Porthcawl) – May 3
First Aid Course – 6th and 7th May
Half the spaces have already been taken on this course, remember that you need to apply by 10 April 2017 if you would like a place.

Chatting to a local walk leader about first aid I mentioned this course. His response was to pat his mobile phone, ‘That’s all I need’, he said.

Two anecdotes to dispel that view. First, mountain biking in the pouring rain at Afon, (not what you’d call remote really), when someone became concussed, only one mobile out of nine was able to make a call. Second, An ice climbing fall below Crib Goch led to a broken leg. Training and kit enabled me to keep him safe while we waited six hours in sub zero temperatures for helicopter rescue.

Being able to identify basic symptoms and keep someone comfortable is a duty to ones comrades for anyone going into the hills. This course will give you essential skills for high risk remote activity.

The course is an REC level 2, two day, certificated emergency first aid course. It is a required qualification for NGB awards. The course leaders are experienced mountain rescuers and leadership trainers. The course location is at Swansea University Bay Campus east of Swansea and located not far from junction 42 of the M4.

The cost for members of SWMC is £47. This includes mid break refreshments. The student refectory offers good value lunches or there are open spaces including the beach to take packed lunches.

Places are limited and closing date for applications is April the 10th .
