Care With Graphics File Sizes

Steve and Alan, we should try to avoid using absolutely massive graphics if we can avoid them. They take up (sometimes unnecessary) space on the server and we are charged for each 100mb. We are actually over our allotted 500mb and we'll need to buy some more. Think carefully if you really need a 4000x4000 size picture. It's often useful to put up a large resolution picture, but quite so big? --Tim Hoddy 15:18, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

A valid point; so no probs Tim. However we will need to store the better res photos somewhere. What sort of policy should we follow? Anything for decoration should certainly go but what about photos we need for a potential new guidebook. What sort of criteria should we follow? Begin to store them off-line? Raise the bandwidth? or is it storage space that's the problem? Find another solution? --Del 18:16, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
I think all we need to do is 'keep an eye' on things and use our best judgement in each case. What we shouldn't do is use the Wiki as a repository for quidebook quality photos; we will pay through the nose for both space and bandwidth.

Of course we should keep copies off-line of the originals (in their original size). --Tim Hoddy 19:55, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Ok i'll reduce each photo to a minimal size from now on. Shouldn't be too much hassle in all honesty. --Del 20:58, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Yup, shall do. BTW are Toggers, Taggers but spelled differently/incorrectly ?--Alan rosier 13:25, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

People out walking dogs and taking photos. That sort of thing Alan :) --Del 10:02, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Delete Perms

Whilst on the subject - how about deleting some? I haven't been able to.--Alan rosier 13:32, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

I'll sort out deleting perms for you. I restricted it when I first set up the wiki so that we could avoid possible nasty mass-deletions. I'm sure that's not going to happen now... I'll sort you out when I get home.--Tim Hoddy 14:33, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
Ta--Alan rosier 21:26, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
Could I be enabled to do that too? I'll sort out some of my pages then when I get time. Mainly the Ponty Common one! --Del 10:02, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

You should both have 'delete' permissions. If you don't see a 'delete' tab after logging on let me know and I'll investigate. --Tim Hoddy 10:17, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Is 'delete' working for you blokes yet? Our school has just finished its inspection by ESTYN. I can get a life again and maybe do some work on this thing...! --Tim Hoddy 18:53, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
Didn't know your were a teacher Tim. I do Primary :) --Del 22:26, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
I'm secondary. Science, ICT and sometimes Maths.

Nah, its rejecting it. I don't have permissions. Goddamnit!--Alan rosier 19:05, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

What are you attempting to delete and what does it say when you try? --Tim Hoddy 18:15, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Can't Delete

Ok you should have permisson now. Wasn't a Mediawiki problem at all. --Tim Hoddy 06:56, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Ok, now that it works, you'd better know that images aren't actually deleted from the server, they are merely moved out of the way so that they can become "undeleted" if we wish. So... we actually don't free up space. Best to carefully consider the suitability of an image before uploading. Just something to bear in bind... not something to be concerned about too much... we can always buy more space. --Tim Hoddy 22:49, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Well thats a waste of time then, when does delete mean delete? --81.158.59.169 23:24, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

In the case of Mediawiki, it means never.

Hosting

In terms of hosting (who do we use atm?) I may be able to sort a better deal out with friends when renewal comes up. I'll have to check with them tho; as I suspect there might be a big difference in what they can offer between personal and business use. Always worth a go tho. --Del 20:58, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
We use Mythic Beasts. http://www.mythic-beasts.com/ --Tim Hoddy 23:26, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
I'll ask them about suitable packages when I next see them. That said I guess what we have now works fine anyhow if we keep the bandwidth/space realistic. --Del 10:07, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Hiding Page Titles

Steve, I've added an extension which allows you to hide the title of each page. I've hidden the Pontypridd Common page title. If you're interested in these nice graphics titles, then this extension would be useful. Look at the source to see the 'keyword' that you need to add. --Tim Hoddy 20:20, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Cheers Tim. Works a lot better now! Also - saw you added loads of new templates the other day and looking forward to seeing what thy can do :) --Del 10:02, 21 February 2010 (UTC) --Tim Hoddy 06:56, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
