The ‘east’ New Members day will be on the 11th of April at Gelli, which is a sandstone crag with a good range of routes from Fr 5 to Fr 6c.  Some of them are actually nice and the rock is pretty sound, it’s actually good for a valleys quarry.

“From the M4 Jct.34 take the A4119 highway to the Rhondda Valley arriving at Tonypandy. Do not go into the town but follow the road past the retail centre turning left on the B4223. Pass Glyncornel outdoor centre following the signs for Gelli. Park outside the Gelli rubbish compound then walk left up the track past the sultry goats and well hung donkeys.”

When going up the A4119 as you’re getting close to Tonypandy, there is a sharp right down the hill at a roundabout, then a left at the roundabout at the bottom of the hill. Then you pass the Asda’s on the right then it’s the left turn up the B4223.

Should be good enough. Few points about Gelli, firstly it can be windy up there, so bring a really warm jacket and wooly hat just in case. Secondly, we’re not all going to be able to fit our cars next to the tip. If you’re coming from Cardiff, please car share. Otherwise, park past the tip in the village (just spread out a bit) and walk up, it’ll only add a couple of 100 meters on to the journey.

As for a start time? I’ll aim to be there for about 0900-0930ish. So turn up any time after that. If I’m out climbing for a day, I’ll stay till the light runs out, which will be about 1900?

If you’re coming along, please post on the thread in the BB or email [email protected]

Also if you have a rope and quickdraws, please bring them, otherwise, standard climbing kit, harness, shoes, helmet etc.
