Tide Tables
Can we squeeze in a tide timetable in here too?--Alan rosier 13:53, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
- Ive added a link to a site that does that for us. I can run the same software here and d a couple of tables for this year and the next and have them as actual wiki pages. Could do if we think that's better. --Tim Hoddy 15:00, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Opening Up Discussion Pages
I think its about time to make the discussion page open to all, how about it?--Alan rosier 14:45, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- When I get time, I look into it and set it up. --Tim Hoddy 18:24, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
Will that be all of them or just this one? --Del 18:53, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
I was thinking all of them; in for a penny.--Alan rosier 09:22, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Discussion pages are now open to everyone. Make sure all other content is protected otherwise they'll be able to edit that too! If we have a mass of spam then I'll have to revert to as before. I'll look into a way of solving any spam problem. --82.7.192.163 15:10, 23 June 2009 (UTC) (aka Tim Hoddy)
Yeah having 'all' available is great - nice one Tim. As said it can always be switched back if '
- Also... discussion pages cannot be started by 'all'; 'all' can merely add to existing pages. --Tim Hoddy 15:33, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Spam
Had our first spam today. It was on this discussion page. You can check back to see what it was in the history. Will look into this on Sunday and see if I can set up a spam-defeating "bot". --Tim Hoddy 06:09, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
'Smelling' Fetish and 'Kilt' Fetish eh? What next 'Pork Chop' Fetish?
Sounds interesting! --Del 19:29, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
- I'm going to add some anti-spam measures over the weekend and things should be back to normal by Monday. --Tim Hoddy 11:20, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
- Ok... added a little 'capcha' mechanism. Anonymous users will have to do a simple sum before their edits are allowed. This should defeat the simple spam bots.
- Will watch it over this weekend to see how effective it is. --Tim Hoddy 11:58, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
How do I add a web link - without being told I am spam and not being able to save the page?--Alan rosier 15:20, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- Add the link first to Spam-whitelist --Tim Hoddy 16:55, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
OK that didn't work for me, can you see this page for what I'm trying to do wikitopo.com/forum.php?postId=196--Alan rosier 17:18, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- It seems to work ok... --Tim Hoddy 23:30, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- Ah... I see... you want to link in the images only ? --Tim Hoddy 23:31, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I've enabled that but it still won't work with WikiTopo because WT don't specify a filename in the URL.
- This will work http://www.southwalesmountaineering.org.uk/bbimages/alan.gif
- Look at the source. --Tim Hoddy 00:52, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
Temporary Page Protection
Seem to be getting a bit of spam on this Talk page. I'm temporarily disabling write access for non-users. --Tim Hoddy 18:23, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I meant disabling write-access just to this talk page. --Tim Hoddy 12:45, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- I've had to make everything read-only for anonymous users. Just managed to stop a big a big spammers attack on the Talk pages. Took me about 45 mins to clean up... I caught it only a few minutes into the attack. Very fortunate.
Simple Crag Information Symbols
Tim. Could we have some more symbols - bit like rockfax. I would like Sit Start, Juggy, delicate, poor landing etc. If you want me to design them could you let me know how to do it.
- Sure... First thing to do would be to look around to see if there are any "Free" symbols available on the Net that you could use or adapt. If there aren't we'd have to design and create our own.
- If you do design them, design them first on paper and then build them with something like Photoshop or 'The Gimp'.
- I can help a little with this second bit. The most important thing is that you have a clear idea of what you need before you get to start work on computer. Any graphics designers in the club? --Tim Hoddy 19:25, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Tim. Another Question. How do we put those little tags on the map? --Chris Wyatt 21:37, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
- Look at the markup/source for the maps. For most of the crags you will see that an icon is specified with log/lat. You can get the long/lat with a gps or possibly GoogleEarth. We may be able to design better (more suitable) versions of these icons. I think bouldering needs to be marked with a different colour. Not the Blue for Sport and Orange for Trad --Tim Hoddy 09:58, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
Google Ranking
With Chris' interest in getting Google to put us in the Top Rank of of Google's search results, I suggest making the aims of the Wiki a little more clear on the Main Page; i.e. at least put the words 'bouldering' and 'rock-climbing' as titles or subtitles. Google's weighting of first pages and those pages containing keywords as titles, will will mean that the rest of the site will then receive a higher rank. --Tim Hoddy 09:20, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Quick links
How about a quick link to contents page?--Alan rosier 19:47, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- Good idea --Tim Hoddy 21:16, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
BTW hows the news page idea coming along?--Alan rosier 19:47, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- Well, we can do that... I'll re-arrange the front page and put it in this page for approval/modification/rejection. --Tim Hoddy 21:16, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
Historical Section?
I just noticed we don't have one on the wiki. What's the plan for this? I know Gwyn did it last time but it certainly needs a bit of an update. I could help with the S.Wales section and ask Gwyn again to do the rest but he is pretty busy with the CC Pembroke guide. The wiki would be a great place to pool all this lost info.
As for including a historical section in the next book I really want it included! I know guides (inc the new CC books!) are veering away from this and putting it all on a website. Personally i'd like to see an old CC style of routes, by chronological year, in the back. I've spent hours reading history bits of guidebooks and will always buy the one with the best history sections. I'd also like to see epics, ect, included in the route descriptions, i.e. Ogmore endeavours! What are people thinking? --Del 10:01, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
