Talk:Cefnstylle Quarry

Gower's only sandstone "crag" This "crag" is listed in the 2003 guidebook on page 387. I'm not even going to post its location here as the place is a complete waste of time even for the most curious. I cannot see how it ever had four routes of 11m in length of grades HVS to E3. On the other hand, maybe I visited the wrong place.

May as well add it for completeness? I dropped my guide into the sea and it's a little illegible. Where abouts is it? --Del 15:31, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

It's a complete waste of time... Gwyn told me that it was a waste of time and I couldn't believe that Gower's only sandstone "crag" could not be worth a visit. Gwyn was right! --Tim Hoddy 19:42, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Argh .. your just making me WANT to go now... --Del 19:53, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

You must banish all thoughts of ever visiting this so-called "crag". It's just not worth it... I can't even bring myself to type a paragraph describing its location. --Tim Hoddy 16:30, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
Reluctantly...

"ACCESS Take the B4295 west along the North Gower from Gowerton for about 1 mile to an umarked road on the left by a telephone box and a row of houses. Follow this road up past the houses to a track leading off right. Follow this track for 100m to arrive at the quarry on the left. If travelling by public transport the #17 bus runs from Swansea city centre to Gowerton, then proceed as above." --Tim Hoddy 18:38, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Heh .. i'll let you know how I get on :) Won't be a while tho - off to the Pembroke CC meet next weekend but i'm sure i'll be in Gower again at some point. --Del 20:24, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Serious! You'll regret it! --Tim Hoddy 21:53, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Edit on 22 Nov 2009

Are you serious? :-) Tim Hoddy 22nd October 2009 (UTC)

Dunno, still not been Tim. It's been raining so much i've been training to be a raft guide! :P --Del 23:26, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Del, I've added a photo... it actually makes the place appear a little better than it actually is. Hopefully you won't now want to hunt out this little piece of Gower esoterica.  :-)

OK, a bit of history and a few corrections. I first started climbing on the crag in about 1984 - it being a few hundred yards from my parents house where I grew up. Initially I just bouldered there but later started doing routes. The bolts were placed by Jason and Ian Bradshaw and the first ascents were made by various combinations of the Bradshaws/me/Jez Portman. Can't remember who did what and when and its hardly important. We did not publicise the venue partly because of the sensitivity of its location adjacent to houses and partly because - well its crap! I was amazed when it subsequently appeared in the guidebook. However, in defence of the crag, the photo DOES NOT show Cefnstylle Quarry! - what is shown really does look bad. The directions to the crag are wrong so it seems like a case of mistaken identity. The location is as follows - follow Cefnstylle Road until you come to the first tree canopy. The crag is in the woods on the right immediatly after the last house on the right before the tree canopy.

I hope this is of use to you.

Regards, Paul Christie

Thanks very much for this Paul! --Tim Hoddy 12:17, 12 February 2011 (GMT)

Just noticed this, funny! You may have to eat your words Tim. --Alan rosier 14:21, 19 April 2011 (BST)

Yes... I've been telling everyone that it's complete rubbish... which, even after the truth has come to light, is not that far off the mark" --Tim Hoddy 14:56, 19 April 2011 (BST)
